Les Etats-Unis défendraient militairement Taiwan, si Pékin envahit l’île autonome. C’est ce qu’à déclaré hier lundi 23 mai, le président américain, Joe Biden, à Tokyo lors d’une conférence de presse commune avec le premier ministre japonais, Fumio Kishida. « Nous étions d’accord avec la politique d’une seule Chine, nous l’avons signée(..) mais l’idée que Taiwan puisse être prise par la force n’est tout simplement pas appropriée », a déclaré le président américain arrivé au Japon dimanche soir après une visite de trois jours en Corée du Sud. Affichant un front uni face à Pékin, les deux dirigeants ont aussi réaffirmé leur vision commune d’un Indo-Pacifique libre et ouvert et dit s’être mis d’accord pour surveiller l’activité navale chinoise dans la région, où la Chine montre des ambitions croissantes.
