La Finlande a annoncé dimanche 15 mai, sa candidature «historique» à l’OTAN, avant une réunion décisive en Suède en vue d’une probable demande d’adhésion simultanée des deux pays, conséquence directe de l’invasion russe de l’Ukraine.
«C’est un jour historique. Une nouvelle ère s’ouvre», a affirmé le président finlandais Sauli Niinistö en annonçant à Helsinki la décision de l’exécutif finlandais de demander l’adhésion.
Une entrée dans l’OTAN des deux pays nordiques, vue d’un très mauvais oeil par Moscou, serait la preuve qu’«une agression» comme l’invasion de l’Ukraine «ne paie pas», a affirmé le secrétaire général de l’alliance occidentale, Jens Stoltenberg.
Alors que le Kremlin a justifié son invasion de l’Ukraine par le risque d’extension de l’OTAN à ses portes, une adhésion de la Finlande rallonge de quelque 1.300 kilomètres la frontière entre la Russie et l’alliance.
Le patron de l’OTAN s’est dit «confiant» dans la possibilité pour les pays membres de l’Alliance de trouver un compromis avec la Turquie, dont le président Erdogan avait subitement affiché son hostilité à une adhésion suédo-finlandaise.
Ankara a «clairement indiqué son intention de ne pas bloquer» l’entrée des deux pays, a-t-il assuré.
