L’Opep et ses alliés, dont la Russie, ont décidé jeudi 31 mars, de s’en tenir à une augmentation modeste de leur production de pétrole en mai et de renoncer à l’utilisation des données de l’Agence internationale de l’énergie (AIE), signe d’une dégradation des relations avec l’Occident.
L’Opep+ va augmenter sa production d’environ 432.000 barils par jour (bpj) en mai.
Le groupe informel formé par l’élargissement de l’Opep à plusieurs autres gros producteurs de brut continue ainsi de résister aux appels des Etats-Unis et de l’AIE à accroître l’offre pour faire baisser les cours, dopés par la guerre en Ukraine et les sanctions occidentales contre Moscou.
L’Arabie saoudite et les Emirats arabes unis (EAU), qui disposent de la majeure partie des capacités de production non-employées au sein de l’Opep, justifient ce refus en expliquant que le groupe ne doit pas se soucier de politique mais seulement de l’équilibre entre l’offre et la demande mondiales.
« L’Arabie saoudite va chercher à éviter une confrontation avec la Russie au moment où la production russe est en difficulté », estime Callum Macpherson, d’Investec.
De son côté, l’administration Biden envisage de puiser jusqu’à 180 millions de barils de pétrole dans les réserves stratégiques des Etats-Unis et l’AIE doit se réunir vendredi pour débattre d’une initiative similaire collective.
Le cours à terme du baril de Brent perdait près de 4% vers 14h00 GMT à 108,82 dollars. Il avait dépassé 139 dollars le 7 mars, du jamais vu depuis 2008.
