Manger ses ongles, également connu sous le terme médical « onychophagie », est un comportement courant observé chez de nombreuses personnes, en particulier lorsqu’elles sont confrontées à des situations stressantes ou anxieuses. Ce comportement peut sembler anodin, mais il peut avoir des conséquences sur la santé des ongles et même sur le bien-être mental de la personne concernée.
L’onychophagie est souvent considérée comme un mécanisme d’adaptation au stress, une manière pour certaines personnes de faire face à leurs émotions intenses ou à l’anxiété, mais cela peut également devenir une habitude difficile à briser. Cependant, manger ses ongles peut avoir des conséquences néfastes. Outre le risque d’infection due à l’introduction de bactéries dans la bouche, cela peut endommager les ongles et les cuticules, entraînant des saignements, des douleurs et des infections.
Pour gérer et surmonter l’onychophagie, il existe plusieurs stratégies. Tout d’abord, il est utile d’identifier les déclencheurs du comportement, tels que le stress, l’anxiété ou l’ennui, et d’apprendre des techniques de gestion du stress, telles que la méditation, la respiration profonde ou l’exercice physique. Il est également recommandé de garder les ongles courts et bien entretenus, d’appliquer un vernis amer ou d’utiliser des méthodes de substitution, comme le fait de manipuler un objet anti-stress.
